Innovation in ultrasonic testing

Research project with SIEMENS yields significant results

Within the scope of a joint research project, SIEMENS and Saarschmiede have adapted a new method called SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) for industrial applications. It will revolutionize the measurement process of ultrasonic testing for forgings. The developers take advantage of a principle that originally comes from radar technology and has already been used successfully to examine other workpieces: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).

The view into the material significantly improves by this method, especially at edges, and there is less noise. Ultrasound tomography (another way of describing SAFT) also makes it possible to inspect parts made of complex new metal alloys that withstand higher temperatures and pressures, which could in turn lead to greater output in a gas turbine.
