Saarschmiede to supply forgings to what is to be the largest solar power plant in the world

16. December 2016

On the occasion of the UN COP22 Climate Change Conference from November 7 to 18 in Marrakech, Morocco, the host country’s plans for an expansion of its renewable energies, over and above its other climate objectives, were impressive: By the year 2030, a 52 % share of renewables is planned.

A large contribution to the achievement of this aim is to be made by the „Noor“ power plant complex in the vicinity of the city of Quarzazate (Morocco). The complex is planned to have an installed capacity of 580 MW after completion, to be supplied by its four solar power plants. One of the power plants (Noor-1) has already been on the grid since the beginning of the year, supplying 160 MW of electricity. The power plants are equipped with thermal storage systems, so that energy can be supplied also at peak times in the evening hours.

Saarschmiede supplied Siemens, a supplier for the construction of the power plant complex, with two turbine shafts (50 t low pressure and 26 t medium pressure) as well as a welded turbine shaft – assembled from a middle-pressure mudule (37 t) and a low-pressure module ( 31 t).
